Who’s ready for summer? I know these two cuties are!
As soon as I saw this fabric combo, the ideas for something cute for my little nieces – Nina and Tess – started brewing. I knew that however I decided to used these pieces, it had to be something that showcased both of these adorable prints.
The fabric is from Makower/Andover (titled respectively Paws and Cats). I purchased it from Friday’s Off – an online Canadian fabric store.
I just recently came across this shop and it was love at first sight. Everything Alanna carries needs to come live with me. New fabrics are constantly being added and her Le Club monthly fabric subscription program is a perfect stash builder. Oh – and shipping is just $5.95 flat rate ($2.00 if your order is under $20.00!!). So perfect (and dangerous).
I quickly decided that I needed to make the Oliver + S Reversible Bucket Hat for my sweet little nieces. It’s a free pattern and made for a fun afternoon project.
I found it interesting that all the seams were sewn at 1/2 inch and then trimmed to an 1/4 inch. I don’t know if that’s because it’s less finicky to sew a 1/2 inch? Or it’s more precise to sew a 1/2 inch and then trim? (As opposed to just sizing the pattern for 1/4 inch seams?) Regardless, I followed the instructions.
And the only tricky part in the whole pattern is attaching the top of the hat to the sides. You need to liberally cut into the sides with a little 1/4 inch cut and gently encourage the sides to fit around the top of the hat.
It took maybe an hour for each hat and that includes cutting out the fabric.
I used my favourite Aurifil for all the seams and to quilt around the brim of the hat. (Which Friday’s Off happens to sell, by the way!)
And now these little sweeties are ready for summer!
Can’t you just see them getting a whole wardrobe of these hats!! So cute!
(Special thanks to their Momma for taking these photos of them. I just can’t get enough of them!)
And now for a little giveaway! Friday’s Off has generously donated a $25 gift certificate to their shop. What a great way to add to your fabric stash! Just follow the rafflecopter prompts. I’ll announce the winner on Wednesday, June 17, 2015.
THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ERIN M! I’VE CONTACTED YOU VIA EMAIL.
Trina, these are adorable! I love your fabric combo.
And my favourite fabric on the site right now is the Pretty in Pink fat quarter bundle. I think it would make an adorable baby girl quilt!!
The hats are so sweet. I’m going to download the pattern and use some of the Lewis and Irene prints from Friday’s Off. But that must wait until I finish 2 UFOs that I have on the go! One is a recreation of a photo of our cat Mike and the other is a queen size quilt that is taking forever to finish! Maybe the idea of sewing hats for little ones will spur me on to finish. Thanks for the inspiration!
I have to say that the children are sweeter than the bucket hats!!! This summer I am hand quilting a quilt for our master bedroom!! It is the biggest quilt I have ever made too!! I call the quilt Dream Batik!
I’ve never heard of this Canadian Fabric shop… This is awesome and I’m very interested in the monthly club!!!
The hats are cute. I plan to make a couple of skirts for my granddaughter this summer.

I just finished an outfit for my grand-niece today from a Butterick pattern. It’s been a long time since I made a garment piece, but it was so much fun and it turned out great! I will try to get it on my blog this week. I hope to make more little girl things this summer.
This summer, I am sewing bags.
I really like the *I Love Grey* fat quarter bundle! It’s just what I’m looking for to make a table runner.
My favorite fabric from Fridays off is Baggage Check.

Hi, machine quilting a blue and cream throw for my daughter as a gift! Thanks for your giveaway!
These hats are gorgeous, I want to go into my sewing room and make some. I just dropped 2 quilt tops off to the machine quilter last night. I want to finish my New York Beauties quilt before I go off to retreat at MAQ in July and I’m also working on a scrap quilt with my sons old button up shirts that he has grown out of.
Great hats… And great fabric too, what a great combo!
Would very happily wear one myself!!!! Sewing a twin quilt this summer. Marta S
