Quilting Therapy

Pug Applique Mini Quilt @ www.willcookforshoes.ca

This was really hard to finish. I don’t know what was more difficult, that the final pieces kept bringing up so many memories. Or that being done seemed so final.

I’ve been working on this for a while. It is now being done in memory of our sweet little rescue dog, Hope – who passed away on January 10 in our arms. When I started it, I dreamed it would be to raise funds to help her get better. But God had other plans for her.

It’s been a hard journey. A day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t though about her and shed a tear in her memory.

I handed this over to the Boston Terrier and Pug Rescue of Southern Manitoba on the weekend (and shed a few more tears). They will auction it off in a upcoming fundraiser. I hope to make a matching Boston Terrier mini quilt for them in the future. I’m still looking for a Boston Terrier pattern to use. If you know of somewhere to find that pattern, I’d love to hear from you!

I used up some scrappy pieces in the appliqué process. And the blue is Bella Solids by Moda. And everything was quilted/sewn with Aurifil.

Do you quilt/sew/knit/cook/craft as a cathartic process? I think working on this has helped me bring my feelings to the forefront. Which I don’t think is bad. Just hard.

I’m thankful to have the opportunity to honour her memory this way.

We miss you sweet girl.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Barb. Melissis left a comment and suggested checking out Silver linings originals. They have a nice BT pattern to e-download there!

Finishing the quilt must have felt like losing one more link with Hope, but really, the proceeds from the quilt, and the fact that you made it are almost like Hope’s legacy. Love, care, and yes, hope.

You kinda perfectly articulated what I was having such a hard time with, Laura. Thank you for that… your comment has helped me figure out what I need to do next. Hope you are well. Give Odin a little hug from me.

Silver linings originals has a very nice Boston terrier head that is paper pieced and they will also do custom patterns. They also have many other AKC patterns and mixed breeds as well.

Thanks Melissia! I have actually been on that site before to look for basset patterns. Just went over there and you are so right, they have a great BT one too!

I got tears in my eyes reading your post. Thank you for resharing this today. I want to make one of these sampler quilts of my Jackson…I love the simplicity and esp. the butterflies quilted in.

Thank you so much for your very kind and sweet comment. Hope is so dearly missed. I was happy with how this quilt progressed, I used a turned edge appliqué method, but that meant I could do much of the sewing from the comfort of my couch in the living room. Thanks again for your touching comments.
