Roly Poly Pinafore Pattern

You know the saying, “best laid plans?”

That’s what I was saying last night as I set out to work on some home decor sewing.

I was a little unmotivated by it all – it’s more necessary sewing than “fun sewing” in that what I needed to work on was a pretty utilitarian sewing project (sew white pillow covers for living room pillows – go!)… when I finally mustered up the energy to get at ‘er (granted, I had little energy left as I had just finished golfing 18 holes of golf with my little brother)… I couldn’t find the fabric I had set aside for the project. I looked everywhere. Where did this basic white fabric go? I have two big bins for fabric and the white yardage was no where to be found. I even looked through it twice!

Well… since I had my sewing machine out and I was ready to go… I decided to work on another project – The Roly Poly Pinafore by ImagineGnats.

I actually won this pattern in a blog contest. It’s so cute! I figured not finding my home decor project material tonight was a sign to work on this!

A quick aside…

This is how I store my patterns. In a three-ring binder in clear plastic sleeves. I can keep the instructions and the patterns all together without loose ends flapping about. How do you store your patterns?

Back to the Roly Poly Pinafore Pattern…

(say that 10x fast!)

Since I first came across this pattern I knew I had to make it for a special little niece of mine. The pattern can be tailored in so many different ways and can suit so many different fabric choices. I decided to make this one with a bright fabric and lining, and included the option for pockets (a great place to keep little snackums).

The pattern comes together quite easily. I don’t know if the instructions have been updated since I received my version – I’ve had it for a while. I did find them a little “lean” but I’ve done enough of these types of patterns that I was able to think through the steps.

For this project I was able to use a few of the accessories that come with the Janome Juno G1212 I’m trying out right now (read more about WHY I’m trying out three beautiful Janome machines from the Janome Shop-At-Home line here).

I’m really enjoying this machine! It’s super lightweight so I’m able to move around to different spots in the house with ease. Sometimes I like to work in my office, but other time I like to work at the dining room table. I can pick up and go from either spot with ease.

The Roly Poly Pinafore pattern has a cute little front pleat detail.

The instructions suggest tacking it in place with a straight stitch and recommend using a longer stitch length (super easy to adjust on the Janome Juno G1212) and also say that this is an easier stitch to do if you use the zipper foot (included with the machine).

Buttons at the shoulder straps of the pinafore finish off this cute little top/dress. The Janome June G1212 has a 4-step button stitch. Super easy to use!

From start to finish, this project took less than two hours. It’s so adorable. I can’t wait to see it modelled in person for me! So glad I couldn’t find my other home decor fabric that I intended to work on last night… I have been wanting to finish this project for some time now and I’m so glad I did!
